The Romania plans to modernize its fleet of tanks by purchasing 216 new combat vehicles, as well as 76 auxiliary units such as tractors and pontoon bridges.
The program will begin later this year, with the first phase already underway, which involves the arrival of 54 updated Abrams tanks, upgraded to the M1A2 SEP v3 variant, recently purchased from the United States.
The estimated value of the contract for the second phase is around $7.6 billion, including local manufacturing and personnel training.
The Romanian government aims not only to assemble the tanks in the country but also to produce key components, such as armored hulls and targeting systems, thus strengthening the national industry. Assembly, subsystem integration, and final testing will take place in Romanian production units, accompanied by negotiations for technology transfer and the training of local experts.
Before making the final decision, Romania evaluated different models, including the Leopard 2, the American Abrams, and the Korean K2 Panther, the latter being considered the most flexible in terms of technology transfer and industrial integration.
The objective of the program is to modernize the fleet, reduce dependence on imports, and increase the country’s defense capability, with the final approval still dependent on Parliament and contracts with manufacturers.
